At the heart of this new system is a large diameter mount that allows for new Z mount lenses to be equipped with large, light-gathering rear elements and ultra-fast apertures. This is coupled with the Z7's reduced flange distance (the distance between a lens' mount and the surface of the sensor) from 46.5mm in the F system to a mere 16mm. Though this large Z mount is designed specifically for Nikon's new line of ultra-fast Z lenses, it can still be paired with an optional adapter for use with most of Nikon's F mount lenses.
